So here I am, embarking on a journey in running my own cybersecurity firm, 6 Paths Cyber Security. If you had told me this is where I’d end up back when I was studying theatre at UC Riverside, I probably would’ve laughed. Cybersecurity? Really? But as with most things in life, the path wasn’t exactly a straight line.
The truth is, I’ve had these technical skills and abilities since I was a kid, long before the term “cybersecurity” existed in the way it does today. Back then, being a hacker wasn’t celebrated. It was frowned upon. People didn’t see it as a career path, let alone an honest way to make a living. That’s probably why I never pursued a technical degree in college. Instead, I followed another passion: storytelling and theatre. But no matter what I was doing, I always had a knack for solving complex problems, breaking things apart, and figuring out how they work.
Eventually, those skills led me back to technology and cybersecurity. It’s funny how life works sometimes, right?
Now, after years of working for big names in the industry like Rapid7 and CynergisTek, I’ve taken the leap to start my own firm. And let me tell you, it feels right.
Why the Name 6 Paths Cyber Security?
If you’re a fan of Naruto, you’ve probably heard of the Sage of the Six Paths. If not, let me break it down. The Sage is a legendary figure, someone who’s achieved mastery in ways that seem almost impossible. Becoming a Sage isn’t just about skill. It’s about overcoming trials, gaining wisdom, and developing the kind of insight that changes how you see the world.
To me, that idea of becoming a Sage felt a lot like what it takes to master the art of penetration testing. There’s no single “right way” to be a cybersecurity expert. You don’t wake up one day and suddenly know it all. You have to walk multiple paths: network security, web applications, social engineering, wireless networks, API vulnerabilities. Each one requires a unique skill set, and mastering them takes time, patience, and a lot of learning from mistakes.
That’s the philosophy behind 6 Paths Cyber Security. We take the time to master every path because security isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every client is different, every challenge is unique. So, we bring a Sage-like approach to every engagement. Not just checking boxes, but truly understanding and solving problems in a way that sticks. That’s the 6 Paths security journey!
But Why Start My Own Firm?
Great question. After years of working for other companies, I started to see the same patterns. Security often felt like a checklist, something companies do because they have to, not because they fully understand the value of doing it right. I wanted to change that.
Starting 6 Paths was my way of saying, “I’m going to do this security journey my way.” I wanted to build a firm that actually helps businesses improve their security postures, not just tick boxes for compliance. It’s about more than running the latest tools or exploiting vulnerabilities. It’s about understanding the whole picture and crafting solutions that make sense.
Plus, I wanted the freedom to teach. I know firsthand how hard it can be to break into this field, especially if you don’t fit the “typical” mold of what people think a hacker should look like. There’s so much gatekeeping in cybersecurity, and that’s something I’m passionate about changing. I didn’t come from a traditional IT background, and I think that gives me a fresh perspective. My goal is to help the next generation of security enthusiasts, especially those who don’t fit the mold, find their place in the industry.
My “Hello World” Moment
If you’ve ever written a line of code, you know about the infamous “Hello World” program. It’s that first thing you write to make sure the code works. It’s simple, it’s basic, but it’s the starting point.
This blog? This is my “Hello World” moment for 6 Paths Cyber Security. It’s my introduction, the first step in something much bigger. Just like that first program, it’s not perfect, but it’s a beginning. And that’s what matters.
